Victorian Eco Centre Network

A group of Eco Centres have joined together to form a network to share ideas, experience, successes and wisdom in their approach to sustainability and connecting with people and communities. The members of the network Yarra Valley ECOSS, CERES Community Environment Park, Port Phillip Eco Centre, MWMG and Iramoo. This network existed previously (2008-9) with Port Phillip EcoCentre, CERES Community Environment Centre and Iramoo to create the publication "Travellers' Guide to Eco Centres".

So what is an Eco Centre?

The Travellers' Guide to Eco Centres (A summary) explores this concept (pg. 2)

There is no simple definition of an ecocentre, as each will vary with its local community.
However, some of the common features of ecocentres are that they:
-- link local people with the natural environment
-- conduct research to find out the needs of the local community
-- provide examples of what people can do in their homes and workplaces
-- build relationships between people with a shared interest in sustainable living
-- are organic, holistic, adaptable, flexible and attractive
-- have activities and actions that are relevant to us now, but with some on the
cutting edge
-- are places that people want to go to, are drawn to and want to spend time in
-- are places where people can interact with others in the community
-- are appropriately governed in ways that provide for the interests and needs of people
seeking sustainable ways of living

-- Ecocentres are ideal places to help bring about effective learning-based change.

The Eco Centre Network Aims to:

  • Get to know each Eco Centre
  • Share skills and actions
  • Build Relationships between Eco Centres
  • Share our issues/barriers and solutions
  • Share our strengths
  • Raise Profiles of Eco-Centres - including support and broader picture

Future Goals

  • Operate as a Alliance – environmentally, politically and socially
  • Joint submissions
  • Joint strategies
