In 2011 Bacchus Marsh Primary School has undertaken the ResourceSmart AuSSI Vic Waste Module, and we have worked as team to manage our waste more responsibly. We have an established Kitchen Garden which featured in ‘Country Life ‘ September issue. All 614 children at our school attend cooking classes and you can imagine the amount of food scraps that are created. Fortunately we manage this well with the best fed chickens in Bacchus Marsh. We also have composting bins for the vegetable garden and worm farm.
All classrooms have designating bins for food scraps, recycling and general waste. Each classroom manages it’s own bins. This has been successful and we now have a recycling skip which is used by the whole school community, including the canteen and office staff.
The children have learnt to classify their waste during Specialist Science sessions where they have played sorting games and had discussions and debates about the topic. All students take pride in their school grounds and have helped to develop the vegetable garden, indigenous garden, bush tucker garden, frog bog and Chinese garden during garden sessions and Environmental Science sessions.
We intend to introduce signage to the outside bins next year and continue with our waste management journey in 2012.
