Project Description


Waste programs focus on the ‘Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle’ philosophy and include environmental impacts of current practices and strategies to overcome them.

Duration of activities: ~ 50 minutes
Available for: Grade 3 to 6


You can mix and match activities from two different programs.

  • Discover how everyday choices can have a long-lasting effect on the environment
  • Investigate how long it takes common pieces of packaging, rubbish and other household items to break down with our waste timeline
  • Play “In the Bin”, a waste-busting team game that sorts the contents of an average bin
  • Investigate the CERES worm farm and discover the problems with organics in landfill
  • Handle a real worm and learn about its role in the composting cycle
  • Hunt for minibeasts and learn about food webs and their importance to a healthy environment
  • Explore the environmental and human impacts of paper production
  • Learn about paper fibres, types of paper and the paper recycling process
  • Make and take home your own recycled paper using shredded waste paper
  • Learn some of the Indigenous and European history of the Merri Creek and its changes over time
  • Walk along the creek and observe sources of litter and pollution in drains and waterways, and consider how this affects water quality and the environment
  • Investigate the litter trap and consider ways to prevent litter and pollution in waterways
  • When it comes to wasting food; Australia is among the worst in the world
  • Discover the ‘how and why’ of this huge environmental problem
  • Explore solutions to our food waste epidemic
  • Plan how you, your class and your family can contribute to less wastage of food and a more sustainable future
  • Investigate the world’s fastest growing waste stream, electronic (E-) waste
  • Discover the health and environmental impacts of the many different minerals and toxic materials that make up our every day electronic gadgets
  • Explore solutions to the problem, from recycling to extending the life of your products
  • Conduct a ‘food miles’ audit on a meal to work out which meal travelled the least distance to get to you and discover DURABLE alternatives to DISPOSABLE ones as you ‘Swap Shop’
  • Judge the DUMP AWARDS for products with excessive packaging audit the waste in an average lunch-box and discuss BULK BUYING
  • Investigate plastic alternatives like corn-starch cutlery and portable music devices made from vegetable based plastics
  • Based on your current lifestyle, discover how much air, land and water (our biosphere) you will use in your life by doing your very own Ecological Footprint
  • Consider your demands on the planet for food, transport, shelter, goods and services and absorption of wastes
  • How does Australia’s average ecological footprint compare with other nations? What can you do to reduce it?
