Project Description

EARTH SYSTEMS DISCOVERY

Land programs focus on natural processes and how humans, animals and the land interact with each other and including the exploration of sustainable agriculture.

Duration of activities: ~ 50 minutes
Available for: Grade 3 to 6

ACTIVITIES

You can mix and match activities from two different programs.

  • Discover the importance of soils, different soil types and the life it contains
  • Test soil pH and textures to identify which soils are suitable for growing
    vegetables
  • Using stream tables, discover how erosion occurs across different slopes and different vegetation types as a result of natural processes and human activity
  • Gain an understanding of the role soil plays in water retention, biological habitat and a
    healthy environment
  • Learn about soil deficiencies and soil health, identify ideal soil types for producing food
  • In the Permaculture Backyard at the CERES Eco-house, students will participate in hands on activities investigating sustainable gardening.
  • The Sustainable Gardening session incorporates permaculture principles in order to give students a holistic understanding of sustainable gardening practices
  • Students will investigate how food is produced in a domestic setting using methods such as crop rotation, companion planting, looking after soil, moon cycles and natural sprays for pest management
  • Visit the CERES Organic farm and discover how food production is used in the modern world and how CERES integrates market gardens, orchards, propagation, organic waste recycling, irrigation and animal systems into a sustainable agricultural system
  • Participate in hands-on activities and investigate how food is produced in managed environments with a focus on water use, soil quality, crop care, natural pest control, plant selection and free-range chickens
  • Consider the differences between ecological and conventional farming practices
