Cooking for Change Project

Cooking for Change Project 1CERES partnered with Spectrum Migrant Resource Centre worked with young people from diverse backgrounds in a 14 week hospitality work experience program. Students volunteered their time to this project to help with their work readiness and employability skills. The students were working towards completing units from Cert II in Hospitality and planning for and creating a pop-up restaurant event. Students named the event ‘Winter Feast – A dinner with friends’. All the food was sourced from sustainable and local sources through our own CERES Market and Grocery.

Our Cooking for Change “Winter Feast” was a wonderful night of celebration and sharing. The students who completed this 14 week training program were appropriately proud as they planned, prepared and presented a 3 course meal for over 30 people on Friday night. Guests were treated to a trio of fresh dips, mini bruschettas and a choice of mains, topped off with stunning spiced, poached pears in syrup with homemade vanilla-bean ice cream. Despite the large quantity of peeling, chopping, serving and washing up, these remarkable young people showed great team work as they calmly and cheerfully pulled it all together. Students were presented with certificates and speeches of praise. After being initially thinking they would be too shy to speak at the event, on the night the group stood up and gave a heartfelt speech and thank you to the program and their trainer Marianne.

Students completed this project with new found confidence and skills in the kitchen and hospitality, improved language and communication skills, completed accredited unit in Food Safety, an official reference, certificate, employability skills and experience in hospitality.

Our thanks go to the CERES Hospitality trainer Marianne Mills, the students, family, friends and supporters who attended as guests, and Inner North Community Foundation who kindly funded this project and made it all possible.
