“Every day is a WALK or RIDE to SCHOOL day”

The notion of sustainability is an integral part of our philosophy.
Alphington Primary has for many years had a focus on sustainability; APS takes a whole of school approach seeking leadership from students, teachers and the community. To promote sustainability and support safety with our Walk and Ride programs, the school community has worked tirelessly to ensure that pathways and routes to our school were safe, including the improved level crossings providing an even safer route to school, the construction of a dedicated Bike Path to our school’s bike shelter, and the launch of a Safety Brochure to raise awareness among residents that our children cross their driveways and walk their streets several times a day.

The school has been actively involved in Walk and Ride programs since 2004. The school has continued with its commitment; however it concurrently emphasises that every day is a walk and ride to school day.
It has become part of the culture at APS, where on any given day the numbers of students walking, skating or riding to school has remained very high. Walking and riding to school has become an embedded practice across the school.

A highlight was the formation of the number 350 when most of the school community walked, skated or rode to school to show their support for the campaign Oct ’09.

(350 is the number that leading scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide—it’s the number humanity needs to get back to as soon as possible to avoid runaway climate change.)
