Our Lady of Mt Carmel Sunbury – Starting ResourceSmart AuSSI Vic

At Our Lady of Mount Carmel Primary School in Sunbury we believe working towards and maintaining a sustainable school environment is an important endeavour. We aim to promote an awareness of the environment and to safeguard it for future generations. Everyone in our community has a responsibility towards caring for our environment.

At the end of 2011 we applied to participate in ResourceSmart Schools – Core Module (AuSSi Vic framework). During 2012 staff participated in professional development in sustainability run by CERES Matthew Navaretti. This year has been about establishing baselines and cataloguing habits.

With the support of Hume City Council we have established a three-bin waste management system. Every classroom has three bins for sorting waste into organic, recyclable and landfill waste. Student monitors ensure that classroom waste is placed in the correct council bins. A contractor collects landfill waste.

We have two tanks to collect rainwater. The water from one plastic tank is used for flushing toilets. The other bladder tank is located under a raised portable. The water from this tank is used to water school gardens.

We are currently in the process of improving the biodiversity of our school. We have applied to our local council for plant donations and we are working towards improving the aesthetics of the school grounds.

We are looking at ways of reducing our paper usage. We now have our newsletter online and parents can book for parent-teacher interviews online.

We are aiming to reduce the amount of printing with the introduction of the one to one laptop program in the grade five/six area.
