Solway Waste Station Projects
In 2010 Solway was successful in receiving a Visy Grant for $1100 and used this to implement 3 waste stations in the school grounds. The aim was to increase the amount of co-mingled and organic recycling and reduce landfill waste.
The Environment Team together with the Assistant Principal did a whole school assembly presentation showing how to correctly dispose of waste in the different bins.
In 2011 all classrooms were setup with small waste stations. Prior to this year students were able to recycle paper/cardboard and food scraps in their rooms but could not recycle co-mingled waste here. Lunches are usually eaten in the classroom so this was a great opportunity to increase our recycling.
The landfill bins were reduced in size to send a strong message to keep landfill rubbish at home. The new bins needed no plastic liners so this further reduced landfill waste.
Together with presentations encouraging Rubbish Free Lunches, these outdoor and indoor waste stations have reduced landfill waste substantially at Solway.
