ST JOSEPHS CRIB POINT KITCHEN CLASSROOM AND MANGROVE WETLAND

St Josephs had been developing a student-led local research project for the restoration of mangroves in the Westernport region. The school contributes to a variety of scientific studies occurring around mangroves including Mangrove Watch in Queensland, the Westernport Seagrass Partnership and the International Mangrove Action Project in Indonesia. Around this time a new Hall was established and the beginnings of a flourishing produce garden were taking root – RB Landscape were consulted on ways to tie all these great initiatives together.

The design brief for this primary school in Crib Point became to effectively link the programs of Mangrove research, food production and healthy meals preparation in a way that will engage and excite the community members and students of St Joseph’s alike.

Our design for St Josephs incorporated a number of innovative building techniques utilising old car tyres and other inexpensive and reclaimed or recycled materials as well a series of themed areas including:

-Kitchen Classroom                                         -Mangrove Wetland
-Indigenous Food garden                                -Grey Water Filtration creek
-Mangrove Propagation House                      -Kitchen Garden plantings
