Sustainability Community luncheon

SUSTAINABILITY COMMUNITY LUNCHEON 2017 Sandringham Campus, Firbank Grammar
On Wednesday our students hosted their first Sustainability Community Lunch. We invited all parents to attend and were overwhelmed with the response. With over 30 parents and grandparents in attendance it was always going to be a special occasion. It was sensational to see the students so involved in the whole process, from planting pumpkins all the way through to harvesting, planning, cooking and serving of a delicious meal. In the words of one of the students: ‘Well, that certainly was a success”.
As part of the day students took their invited guest on a tour of the garden area and several students spoke of their learning along the way; from harvesting seeds to producing the meal.
This is just a sample of the feedback the students received:
‘I couldn’t love this entire program more. My daughter would rather be outside than stuck in a classroom. No matter how amazing the teacher or subject is. To give the students not only an opportunity to be outside but to learn about nature, the environment and their impact (both positive and negative), planning and taking responsibility for a garden/chickens and then taking it to the table is outstanding. It was a subject I could always get her to talk about. To be excited about. Hands on learning is always something to be excited about!- Steff
We just wanted to THANK YOU for the marvellous culinary experience we had at the year 4 sustainability lunch yesterday. The pumpkin soup and bread rolls were absolutely delicious and the children should be very proud of their skills in the kitchen. If they continue to reach such high standards Sandy House might end up being awarded a chefs hats. (Or two) As parents it was equally nourishing to witness firsthand how deeply the children felt their connection to the food and its journey from the hot house to our communal table.- Stephen
