Sustainability Victoria Resouce Smart School Awards

As a result of the work being done at Clonard College, students nominated the school to be represented at the Sustainability Victoria Resource Smart Schools awards. Over 130 schools entered the awards and we were thrilled to be nominated as finalists in three categories:

Water Smart School of the Year, which represents the work undertaken in the Year 8 Water program and water saving initiatives at the school
Waste Wise School of the Year, representing work carried out by the Middle School Environmental Science classes of 2009 and 2010.
Rubbish Free Lunch Category, showcasing the work of the 2010 Middle School Environmental Science class.
On the 22nd October 2010, 50 students from Clonard College travelled to Etihad Stadium in Melbourne to be part of the Sustainability Victoria Awards Ceremony.
As well as being a bit of fun it was a great opportunity for us to showcase what we have been doing in our school regarding sustainability to staff and students from schools all over Victoria and see what other students have been doing in their own schools.
The first award to be announced was the winner of the Rubbish Free Lunch. We were thrilled when Clonard College was announced as the winner for 2010.
We achieved the award for reducing Clonard College waste to LANDFILL by an amazing 66%.
Further to this we reviewed the 3 bin system at the end of Term 3. Students were still using the system incorrectly so the group decided to challenge the school to 4 days with NO bins in ENVIRO WEEK, the last week of Term 3.
We wanted to establish how the school community felt about the issue of rubbish so we conducted several surveys, one at the beginning and at the end of the week, so we could monitor any changes in student behaviour and sentiment. We also interviewed staff and students with the intention of making a final video on waste at Clonard College to outline the positive and negative feedback and educate students on the importance of reducing our waste to landfill by using the recycling bins and compost buckets.
Congratulations Clonard. You are now the WASTE SMART SCHOOL OF THE YEAR. We have won it, now it’s time to live it!
The last category we were nominated for was WATER WISE SCHOOL OF THE YEAR so again we were thrilled to be announced as the winners.
We achieved the water wise award by banning the sale of bottled water at our canteen – using instead a filtered water cooler system connected to tap water available to fill our own water bottles. Clonard also installed 13 water tanks used for the garden and toilet flushing – 10 of these tanks are 5,000 litres, 3 are 3,000 litres and the water tank near the maintenance shed is 22,000 litres.
Our Year 8 program on Water was also congratulated as we investigate how what we do in our catchment affects the water in the Barwon River as it flows from the mountains to the sea.
This fabulous event resulted in Clonard College being awarded $4000 to put toward future sustainability projects around the school.
On behalf of the Environmental Science class we would like to thank all our students for participating in our sustainability projects and would like to encourage other schools to become aware of their local environmental issues and more involved in becoming custodians for our environment by having the courage to care.
