How ResourceSmart Schools Connects to i sea, i care

Organisation: Dolphin Research Institute

Program: i sea, i care

This program is an innovative Victorian marine leadership program.

Connects to the following modules of ResourceSmart Schools: Biodiversity, Water

Accessible to schools in the following Melbourne metropolitan regions: Eastern, Northern and Southern

Appropriate for students in:
Primary – Grade 3 to Grade 6

What is offered to schools:

There are two ways that schools can participate (self funded and through councils); the following info is specifically about the general (self funded) program; council programs are similar but are tailored to what the council wants.

The program is available to all schools; grade 5/6 students (2-4 students from each school)

Students attend 4 workshops over the course of a school year (1 per term)

  • Peer educating – students are taught leadership and presenting skills, then run workshop at own school
  • Catchments – look at pollutants trap and trace journey into the bay
  • Marine national parks – where, role, why important, threats
  • Enviro give back – tree planting, weeding, indigenous culture

The aim is for the students to become ambassadors who take their learnings and present back to rest of their school; they come up with actions that their school could take to look after marine environments

Optional boat trip on Port Phillip Bay (additional cost)
