Program: Healthy Waterways, Healthy Environment

This program helps schools to connect to their local waterway, environment and provide sustainable ways the school can help.

Accessible to schools in the following Melbourne metropolitan regions: Eastern

Appropriate for students in:

Early Childhood
Primary – Prep to Grade 2
Primary – Grade 3 to Grade 6
Secondary – Year 7 to Year 10


What is offered to schools:

Workshops that educate students and teachers about:Local catchment and issues e.g. Stormwater, litter and pollution issues and the impact on waterways, bays and biodiversity.

  • Excursions to local creek if possible to teach real-life science skills of recording and interpreting data becoming citizen scientists by contributing results to River Detectives program
  • Sustainable water use including water smart features e.g. water tanks, raingardens, wetlands
  • Waste, litter and pollution effects on local waterways
  • Waste/litter auditing and management

Networking:

  • Connect the school with their local environment group and potentially other schools in the area for networking opportunities to work together on local issues.

Mentoring:

  • Assist students to develop action plans on ways they can help.
  • Environmental leaders at the school will be encouraged to take on a mentoring role within their school, helping other students understand the issues and develop ideas for addressing problems.

We offer a few different options for schools. Schools can take part in:

  • 4 -5 session program of workshops over 4-5 weeks covering catchments, healthy local waterways, water quality, stormwater and environmental impacts, associated biodiversity, and ways to help
  • An intensive 1.5 hr incursion covering the above (or to suit the schools needs)
  • Excursion at Birdsland Reserve, Belgrave or at the school’s local waterway.
  • We can tailor our programs to meet the needs of the school
  • Our costs are $150/hr. We have funding through Yarra Ranges and Glen Eira Councils to offer free incursions to a limited number of schools
